The Verb 'To Be' (Present Simple)

The verb 'to be' is the most important verb in English. It means "to exist" or "to be in a state." C est le verbe tre en fran ais.

Negative Form

  • Goal: Learn how to say you do not do something or do not like something.

  • Key Idea: We need a helper word (DO or DOES) and the word NOT. (don t or doesn t)

IMPORTANT SIMPLE RULE: When you use doesn't, the main verb loses the '-s'.

  • He likes tea.He doesn't like tea. (No -s on 'like'!)

Change the sentence to the negative form using don't or doesn't.

Interrogative Form (Questions)

  • Goal: Learn how to ask a "Yes/No" question about someone's routine or preference.
  • Key Idea: The helper word (DO or DOES) goes at the very start of the sentence.

Present Simple of the Verb To Be:

He She It: + -s/-es (go -> goes play -> plays like -> likes)

Negative:

I We - You They: subject + don t + verb (no change)

He She It: subject + doesn t + verb (no change)

Interrogative:
