WORD FORMATION

Unit 2: Word Formation (-less, -ful, -hood)

1. Study Word Parts (Suffixes)

-LESS (Adjective Suffix)

Meaning: without or lacking.

Example: Home + less** = Homeless (without a home).

Example: Voice + less = Voiceless (without a voice).

-FUL (Adjective Suffix)

Meaning: full of or having a lot of.

Example: Harm + ful = Harmful (full of harm).

Example: Joy + ful = Joyful (full of joy).

-HOOD (Noun Suffix)

Meaning: state of being, time of life, or group of people.

Example: Child + hood = Childhood (state of being a child).

Example: Mother + hood = Motherhood (state of being a mother).
