Lesson: Describing a Family Member

Focus: Using adjectives of appearance and personality with Arabic translation.

Objective

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to describe family members using adjectives of appearance and personality.

Warm-Up

Ask: “Who is your favorite family member?” “What is he/she like?” Let students give simple answers and introduce the topic of adjectives.

1. Adjectives of Appearance (الصفات الشكلية)

Thin / Slim — نحيفShe is slim and elegant.
Fat — سمينMy uncle is a bit fat.
Beautiful — جميلةMy mother is beautiful.

Curly hair — شعر مجعدMy sister has curly hair.

2. Adjectives of Personality (صفات الشخصية)

Hard-working — مجتهدMy father is hard-working.
Lazy — كسولMy cousin is a bit lazy.

Polite — مؤدبMy sister is polite.
Shy — خجولMy brother is shy in public.
Generous — كريمMy uncle is generous.
Smart — ذكيMy cousin is smart and helpful.

3. Grammar Focus

Structure: Subject + to be + adjective

Examples:

  • He is tall and kind.
  • She is beautiful and polite.
  • They are funny and friendly.

4. Practice

Fill in the blanks with the correct adjective of appearance or personality:

  1. My father is _______ (works hard every day).
  2. My sister is _______ (always smiles and makes jokes).
  3. My grandfather is _______ (not young).
  4. My mother is _______ (beautiful and caring).
  5. My cousin is _______ (doesn’t like to study).

5. Speaking Task

Ask and answer in pairs:

  • Who is your favorite family member?
  • What does he/she look like?
  • What is he/she like?

Encourage full-sentence answers: “My mother is kind and beautiful.”

6. Writing Task

Write a short paragraph (5–6 sentences) describing one family member.

7. Wrap-Up

Review the new adjectives and ask some students to describe their family members aloud.
