Moroccan Eating Habits

A lesson in culture and writing.

A Taste of Morocco

In Morocco, eating is not just about food; it's a social event full of tradition and hospitality. Meals bring families and friends together.

Breakfast is often simple. People enjoy khobz (Moroccan bread) with olive oil, honey, jam, or cheese. This is usually served with a hot cup of coffee or traditional mint tea.

Lunch is the biggest and most important meal of the day. Many families gather to eat a tagine. A tagine is a delicious, slow-cooked stew with meat (like lamb or chicken), vegetables, and spices. On Fridays, the holy day, it is a tradition for families to share a large dish of couscous after midday prayers.

Dinner is usually a lighter meal, sometimes a soup like harira (a rich tomato and lentil soup) or leftovers from lunch.

Of course, we must mention mint tea! It is the national drink of Morocco. It is served all day, every day, to family and guests. Making and serving this sweet tea is an art form and a sign of hospitality and respect.

A key part of Moroccan culture is eating together from one large, communal dish. People often use their right hand (or a piece of bread) to scoop the food. Sharing a meal this way is a symbol of family and community.
