Inviting People to Eat and Drink - Common Core

Lesson: Inviting Friends

Polite Invitations

We use "Would you like to...?" to be very polite. It's great for teachers, new friends, or grown-ups.

  • "Would you like to have lunch with me?"
  • "Would you like to get some juice?"
  • "Would you like a snack?"

Casual Invitations

With close friends, we can be more casual. We use "Do you want to...?" or "Let's...".

  • "Do you want to get pizza?"
  • "Do you want to have a snack?"
  • "Let's go get ice cream!"

How to Say YES!

If you want to go, you can say:

  • "Yes, I'd love to!"
  • "That sounds great!"
  • "Sure, why not?"
  • "Yes, please!" (If they offer you something, like "Would you like a cookie?")

How to Say NO (Politely)

If you can't go, it's nice to be polite.

  • "I'm sorry, I can't. I'm busy."
  • "I'd love to, but I can't."
  • "Maybe another time?"
