Capital Letters - Common Core Lesson
Read, follow the examples, then try the exercises.
Goal: Learn when to use capital (big) letters in English so your writing is correct and easy to understand.
Simple rules — remember these!
- 
First word of a sentence — Always start a sentence with a capital letter.
Example:the cat is sleeping.→The cat is sleeping. - 
Names and places — Capitalize people, cities, countries, and place names.
Example:mohamed lives in rabat.→Mohamed lives in Rabat. - 
The pronoun
I— Always writeIas a capital when you mean yourself.
Example:i have a book.→I have a book. - 
Days, months and holidays — Capitalize
Monday,July,Ramadan.
Example:we meet on tuesday in march.→We meet on Tuesday in March. - 
Titles — Capitalize important words in titles (books, songs, movies).
Example:i like the book "my first lesson".→I like the book "My First Lesson". - 
Acronyms and initials — Capitalize every letter:
UN,USA,BBC.
Example:he works at unesco.→He works at UNESCO. 
Short helpful tips
- 
Capitals are for the start of sentences and for names or special words.
 - 
If you are not sure, ask: “Is this a name or the start of a sentence?” If yes → use a capital.
